Remembering Memorial Day
What did you do for Memorial Day? What did this day of remembrance stand for you? Do you even know what Memorial Day is for?
Memorial Day was formerly known as Decoration Day, a day to commemorate US men and women who did in military service. A day to remember those who gave their lives for this county, for the freedoms that we all enjoy.
Over the years, Memorial Day has lost its true meaning among many Americans. This day was originally observed on May 30, but was changed to the last Monday of May to guarantee a three day weekend. For most Americans Memorial Day now means a guaranteed three day weekend, the start of summer, and a time to picnic with family and friends.
Memorial Day was first observed to honor Union soldiers who died during the Civil War. It was later expanded to as a day of remembrance for any fallen military soldier.
How can you observe this important day? Visit your local cemetery and place flags on the graves of our fallen soldiers. Fly a flag in front of your house. Participate in the “Nation Moment of Remembrance,” give one minute of silence at 3pm local time to remember our fallen soldiers. These acts are so small and easy to do compared to the ultimate sacrifice that our soldiers have given to protect our freedoms and the freedoms of others around the world.
